Class Description
All art is a record of interior attention paid, reflects Carl Phillips in his essay collection My Trade Is Mystery: Seven Meditations From a Life In Writing. Taking the act of paying attention as our point of inspiration, this generative creative nonfiction writing class will center the act of making time for one's writing by focusing on creative process, accountability, and generating new work.
From inspiration to publication, we'll write from prompts, read as writers, and learn from Coffee House Press staff about paths to publication. Exploring the nonfiction form, we will read My Trade Is Mystery and other exemplary works of creative nonfiction, discuss nonfiction craft elements related to lyric and personal essay, ekphrastic prose, experimental/hybrid/docupoetry, and other unique nonfiction forms.
Designed for writers at any stage of their practice, our goal together will be to show up for our work and to create. Please note this is not a workshop-based course. Participants can expect to leave with a renewed writing practice, new work, and the personal satisfaction that comes from having prioritized one's art.
Required materials/readings: Notebook, pen, and please obtain a copy of My Trade Is Mystery by Carl Phillips.
